What is insurance AI?

Insurance AI is software that reads insurance documents and data into structured fields a human can act on. It is not a general chatbot. The useful kind is scoped to a workflow: submissions, claims, pricing support, or reporting.

The phrase is used for everything from call-centre bots to catastrophe models. For operations teams it should mean: take messy PDFs and spreadsheets, emit fields with provenance, and leave judgement with the underwriter or claims handler. Generic large language models can draft email. They do not, by default, bind a limit to a page span or refuse to invent a deductible.

The stack

Extract, then validate, then pack, then a human decision. Anything that skips provenance is a summariser.

Extract means copy named fields into a structure: named insured, limit, deductible, TIV, class, date of loss. Copy is the honest verb. If the page does not contain the number, the field is empty. Validate means check the structure against other documents in the same file. Two documents that disagree are a conflict. A required field with no span is a gap. Pack means the working file a person can act on. Human decision means bind, decline, reserve, refer, or send a chase.

Software that claims to replace the CUO, the claims manager, or the actuary is selling a different category. We do not sell that category.

Not ChatGPT, not template IDP

Insurance AI versus ChatGPT is the first split. ChatGPT is a general model. It completes sentences. Insurance AI here means workflow software with source spans, a chase list, and files that stay in the tenant.

What is IDP in insurance? is the second split. Classic IDP classifies files and pulls fields from known templates. It is the right tool for invoices and stable forms. Reinsurance packs are messy: slips, SOVs, and wordings vary by broker and year. Template maps either fail or silently follow the wrong column.

Do not score any of the three on a single accuracy figure. We will not publish one. Score them on whether you can open the span, whether missing fields stay missing, and whether the file stayed put. Worked example: ACME Construction Ltd

Mystery-shop the category on one fictional pack: ACME Construction Ltd, acme.example. Slip TIV USD 42,000,000. SOV total USD 47,100,000. Hours clause absent. Occurrence limit USD 10,000,000 on slip page 2.

A chat window will usually return a TIV and a hours clause in a paragraph. Template IDP will often classify one PDF and miss the workbook. Operations software should emit a traced limit, a TIV conflict with both spans, and a hours-clause gap. That outcome is the definition in use here. It is also why this website does not take live client packs: the public inspector is the sample, and production ingest is a read-only mailbox in your tenant.

Insurance AI that fills the hours clause to look complete has failed the job. Humans still bind. Machines show their work.
